October marks a monumental milestone for Roylances Tractor Replacements, a business that has been a part of the Forbes community for seven decades. This month, our three-generation family business proudly celebrates its 70th anniversary, a journey of growth, resilience, and unwavering dedication to service, all of which are encapsulated in our company’s long-held statement: “By service we grow.”
From Humble Beginnings to Three Generations
The Roylances story began in 1955, when founder James ‘Jim’ Roylance opened the doors to “Jim Roylance.” From those humble beginnings with just two or three personnel, the business has successfully adapted to a constantly evolving industry.
The first transition to the next generation saw Jim’s sons, Chris and Michael Roylance, take the reins. Chris and Michael helmed the business until Jim’s retirement in 2009. It was then that the family legacy continued, passing to the third generation with Chris’ son, Justin Roylance.
Over the years, Roylances has navigated major changes, from shifting industry technologies and new locations to even the unpredictable Australian weather, which has tested the team with more than a few floods. Yet, through it all, the family’s commitment to service has been the constant anchor.
Community and Team: The Heart of Roylances
While adapting to change, two things have remained fundamental to our company’s success: its staff and its community. Today, Roylances employs over 30 dedicated staff, a testament to its growth.
“From humble beginnings with 2 or 3 personnel, through to the 30 plus staff we have today, we know we wouldn’t be where we are without them. They make the business what it is,” Justin notes. “Their dedication, their passion to the business but as well as to the customers and community.”
Our business’s story is tied to the community of Forbes and the surrounding areas. “At Roylances, we believe that being a part of the community means giving back,” explains Justin. The company supports local talent, sponsors public events like local shows and racing events, and hosts its own bi-yearly golf day, with all profits going to a local charity.
Justin’s pride in his team’s community spirit is clear when reflecting on their recent actions. When asked about a proud achievement, he stated:
“I don’t think there is one thing here we can single out, there have been many achievements in the last 70 years, but something more recently was assisting the community of Eugowra after their devastating floods. Almost our entire Forbes team rolled up their sleeves and pitched in for 5 days. This is definitely a proud memory for our company and a testament to the team we have here at Roylance’s.”
A Vision for the Future
When looking ahead, Justin’s motivation goes beyond the family history; it’s about continual improvement and success.
“For me, it’s to see the company grow and succeed, it’s what drives me daily, and I’m proud of where we are and where we are headed. It’s not all beer and skittles, we have our tough days like everyone else. Some people have wins and losses, we have wins and learnings,” he shared.
And with 70 years of history, the question of a fourth generation naturally arises.
“Four generations would be fantastic, time will tell if this will happen. I think it would be a great thing to happen, our 100 year anniversary would be great to see. We will continue to grow and invest in the business, time will tell what the next chapter looks like.”
As Roylances Tractor Replacements steps into its 71st year, the family and team remain committed to the founding principles: adapting to change, backing their staff, and serving the community of Forbes and beyond.
